The CA Intermediate (Integrated Professional Competence) Exam is the second level of the CA Examination conducted by the ICAI or the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India to produce chartered accountants eligible to practice in India. This article aims at giving the candidate an insight into the second level of the CA exam or the CA Intermediate Exam.

Major details of the CA Intermediate Exam are as follows:

A candidate has to fulfill the following eligibility criteria for attempting the CA Intermediate Exam:

  • The candidate must have cleared the CA Foundation Exam and 10+2 OR
  • The candidate must be a graduate/post graduate in the commerce stream with 55% marks or the equivalent grade in the final qualifying degree exam OR
  • The candidate must hold a degree in a discipline other than commerce and must have scored 60% marks in the qualifying exam of the degree.
  • A candidate who has passed the intermediate level exam of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India or the Institute of Company Secretaries of India is also eligible to apply.

Other details include:

  • The CA Intermediate Exam comprises of eight papers of 100 marks each.
  • Paper 1 tests the candidate on Accounting (Applications of Accounting Standards, Accounting and Special Transactions etc).
  • Paper 2 tests the candidate on Corporate and Other Laws (The Companies Act 2013, The Negotiable Instruments Act 1881 etc).
  • Paper 3 tests the candidate on Cost & Management Accounting (Ascertainment of Cost and Cost Accounting System, Cost Control and Analysis etc).
  • Paper 4 tests the candidate on Taxation (Income Tax Law and Indirect Taxes).
  • Paper 5 tests the candidate on Advanced Accounting (Reorganization of Companies, Special Aspects of Company Accounts etc).
  • Paper 6 tests the candidate on Auditing and Assurance (Audit of Different Types of Entities, Audit of Banks etc).
  • Paper 7 tests the candidate on Enterprise Information System and Strategic Management (Ecommerce, Mcommerce and Emerging Technologies, Introduction To Strategic Management etc).
  • Paper 8 tests the candidate on Financial Management and Economics for Finance (Financial Management, Determination of National Income etc).

To clear the exam a candidate has to secure 40% marks in each subject and an overall aggregate of 50%. The CA Intermediate Exam is the second level towards becoming a full-fledged chartered accountant. As can be expected, it is much tougher to crack than the preliminary CA Foundation Exam. The competition gets tougher at this level and candidates need to be thorough with all the topics in the syllabus. There are 8 subjects covered in the examination and all of them are quite important. Candidates are advised to prepare thoroughly before appearing for the CA Intermediate Exam.
